My Lord says ... Luke 17:5-10

*SUNDAY GOSPEL

5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6 The Lord replied,

If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
you would say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’
and it would obey you.

7 Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? 8 Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? 9 Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.”

If You Have Faith
Who among us don’t have faith, unless one doesn’t believe in God?  Faith has a lot of meanings to people with varying degrees of wants and needs.   But faith doesn’t stand alone because we are obliged to do first what is righteous before the eyes of God by seeking first the kingdom of God.  Faith entails sacrifice to pray fervently and to show goodness to others.  Faith comes with action and vice versa.

I have a close friend who had financial problem before.  She has 3 young children to support by herself only because she was abandoned by her husband for many years already for another woman.  She has also her mother who has been bedridden due to stroke.  In spite of these, she has been striving to meet both ends and praying that her financial problems will be resolved.   With her meager salary, she is still generous to give donations whenever possible.  She is a generous giver by heart.

One time, she had only seventy pesos (three twenty peso bills and 2 five peso coins) in her wallet when she attended the Sunday mass.  She gave one twenty peso bill during the collection.  Then after the mass, a poor, old woman begged for alms.  She gave one twenty peso bill to the old woman.  What were left for her to ride home were one twenty pesos bill and 2 five peso coins.  Instead, she just walked home which is five blocks away from the church, to save her money.  As she was walking, she passed by the lottery booth and bought one electronic lottery ticket.  She always buys lottery ticket every time she passes by that lottery booth with having faith  that she will win someday, even a little amount of jackpot money.  The next day,  she found out that she won P10,000,000.00 (ten million pesos), the jackpot money for a 6-digit lottery ticket.

" I will sing of your salvation. In you, O Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me and deliver me; incline your ear to me, and save me. Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety, for you are rock and my fortress. O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked. For you are my hope, O Lord, my trust, O God from my youth. On you I depend my birth; from my mother's womb, you are my strength. My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds."
