My Lord says ... John 1:1-18

*SUNDAY GOSPEL

1 In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God,
And the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. 12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh
And made his dwelling among us,
And we saw his glory,
The glory as of the Father’s only Son,
Full of grace and truth.

15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.' 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, 17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

THE WORD

There are only two words that anyone can often use everyday in communicating with others – good and bad words.  To simply know which of the two have we often used everyday in dealing with others, their differences are briefly cited here – good words that can comfort, uplift, soothe, encourage, strengthen, sympathize, and boost the moral aspects of a person, while bad words that can discourage, frustrate, disappoint, insult, humiliate,  and put down the moral aspects of a person. Which of the two do we often use everyday? Do we put value to every word we use to express our thoughts and feelings to others? Do we really mean what we have spoken or we don’t?  Have we already made or broke a promise to somebody?

I have a close friend whose husband often curses everyday, whether he is angry or not.  She hates hearing her husband express this bad word (the F- word) to anybody whether to her and children, family members, and friends.  Because she didn’t grew up in a family where cursing is allowed to be expressed, she wants her children not to imitate their father’s way of bad verbal expression.   She believes that the power of such words can greatly affect someone’s psychological, spiritual, mental, and emotional aspects of a person.  Mentally, she believes that a person, who curses often, has no mental ability to think what is appropriate  or not appropriate to do.  If he knows good manners and right conduct, a person will not express such bad / ill words.  What comes out of a person's mouth, especially, unkind or bad words determines an aspect of that person's character.  Psychologically, it can greatly influence the self-image of a person hearing it.  It can make the kind of character you will be by how you speak and act. Emotionally, cursing brings about negativity that can resonate to anyone hearing it.  In other words, cursing is like a spear that can pierce a person’s heart, a long-lasting effect that will linger on even when you grow old.  Spiritually, Christian religion teaches no harm to others, whether physically or emotionally.   It can somehow influence others who are members of religious community of such ill manners and conduct. Good words come only from God for His words are perfect and everlasting.
