My Lord says ... Matthew 5:1-12

*SUNDAY GOSPEL

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 He began to teach them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven....

4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

Be-attitudes
People have different personality and that’s why people have different attitudes.  Why  are we not created of the same preferences or choices?  Why are we not created of the same mental, emotional, moral, and spiritual level? Why are we having different perspective in life and make different decisions?  When we were created, one thing we have in common is the gift of free will God has given us.  This answers the questions we noted here previously.

How we live our lives depend on our choices or preferences in life through our free will. And we are truly blessed because of this gift.  But we often abuse this gift because we do things not pleasing to God, like gossiping, murdering or killing, stealing,  insulting, humiliating, disrespecting, committing adultery, etc.  We develop an attitude not pleasing to God, like being selfish, unkind, not generous, uncaring, irresponsible, not hospitable, not appreciative, not humble, not prayerful, etc.  When trials or afflictions happen in our life, we blame others and most especially, God, for our misfortunes at the end.

Our attitude towards ourselves and others show the kind of person we are.  How we use our gift of free will is the determining factor in shaping up the kind of living a person has to be, even though we are brought up in different family atmosphere.   We know that there are two factors that influence our way of being brought up in life  --- family relationship and social factors. The family and social values affect our inner being.  In times of decision making, the most important thing to do is to seek God’s help through constant prayers by acknowledging our weaknesses and asking for guidance.   We need to be humble enough to admit our mistakes and shortcomings and be willing to change.

I have my sister-in-law’s friend who admitted that she becomes more generous to poor people now, especially to those who are in the streets begging for alms.  She told us that she was not generous before to people whom she thinks is still capable of working independently, even though still begging nicely.  She was enlightened when she was with another friend and noticed her friend’s generosity to the person knocking on her car’s window.  She asked her friend why she gave the person money, instead of just ignoring the person.   Her friend’s reason was, “I rather give money to the person instead of me being in that person’s position.  The person asked money in a better way than just stealing money from another person's pocket.  In what situation do you want to be?”

What are our be-attitudes?

********************************************************************************************

" I will sing of your salvation. In you, O Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me and deliver me; incline your ear to me, and save me. Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety, for you are rock and my fortress. O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked. For you are my hope, O Lord, my trust, O God from my youth. On you I depend my birth; from my mother's womb, you are my strength. My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds."

Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4a
